  • John Quincy Adams served one term from 1824-1828. Adams was a Democratic-Republican like his fellow candidate Andrew Jackson, but divisions had split the party. Neither candidate won the majority so the House of Representatives had to make a decision. Thanks to an endorsement from Henry Clay, Adams won despite having less of both the popular and electoral votes.
  • Erie Canal
  • In 1824, Adams appoint Henry Clay as Secretary of State. Clay was the one who encouraged the House to select Adams to become president because Adams supported industrialization and the American system while Jackson did not. Adams then appointed Clay as his Secretary of State. Jackson resigned from the Senate out of anger and his supporters, the Jacksonians, left the Democratic party.
  • In 1828, Adams signed a protective tariff that came to be known as the Tariff of 1828. This led to his decline of popularity, especially among Southerners whom the tariff negatively affected.

  • The Erie Canal was completed while Adams was in office. This was a major canal that linked New York City with the Great Lakes region because it increased trade and population in that area. It allowed for the easy transportation of goods such as wheat and corn.
