  • Hey Delia, I'm curios. I know this is random but I'm asking since you are very good at history. What effect did Confederation leave on Central Canada and the Maritimes?
  • Oh no worries! I love history questions. So yeah, let me tell you about it.
  • Well, it was very different for Central Canada compared to the Maritimes. For Central Canada there were good effects and for the Maritimes not so good.
  • For Central Canada, after Confederation the changes were that there had been growth in Central Canada, Ontario and Quebec's manufacturing industries increased, remote villages grew into bigger factory towns, where people relocated in search of employment, and retail outlets grew to accommodate the new factory's products.
  • Oh, that is good for them!
  • Yeah... but the changes after Confederation for the Maritimes wasn't so good.
  • Oh... Tell me about it!
  • Manufacturing in the Maritimes was in difficulties by the end of the 1880s. The cost of transporting commodities to the rest of Canada was unaffordable. And then, overproduction led to rivalry from Ontario and Quebec-based countries.
  • Soon after, manufacturers went out of business or sold their businesses to become more established competition. Maritimers began to migrate to western Canada and the United States, leaving the region. So, yeah...
  • Oh... That is not very good for them but thanks for telling me more about this topic. :)
