- Lizbeth and Joey spent a lot of time together because all of their siblings didn't live with them. Their parents were away because their mother was a domestic worker and their father was always looking for a job because he was unemployed.
- It ain't right, no man ought to eat his women's food year in and year out.(10)
- Miss Lottie and her son John Burke were very poor and their house showed it. Despite their financial state Miss Lottie kept one thing looking great, her marigolds.
- Lizbeth, you lost your mind (12)
- Lizbeth, Joey, and their friends got to Miss Lottie's house to mess with her and eventually start throwing rocks at her marigolds, destroying them.
- Lizbeth hears her dad and mom bickering about their financial issues and then hears her dad start to cry. This upsets her very much so she feels that she needs to leave.
- Lizbeth wakes up Joey and tells him to go with her. He agrees without knowing where they were heading. Lizbeth goes to Miss Lottie's house and destroys her marigolds. She instantly regrets this as Miss Lottie confronts her.
- The they stood there. Lizbeth feeling horrible about what she has just done and Miss Lottie was broken hearted. This was the moment where Lizbeth was no longer a child and was in fact becoming a women.
