DEAR MARTIN
THE HEROS JOURNEY
DEAR MARTIN
A Novel, Young adult fiction.
My name is Justyce McAllister. I'm a 17-year-old high school senior at Braselton Preparatory Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. I'm ranked fourth in my graduating class of '83. I'm captain of the debate team. I scored a 1560 and a 36 on my SAT and ACT and despite growing up in a bad area. I have a future ahead of me that includes an Ivy League Education, eventually a law degree, and a carerr in public policy, (page 10)
JUSTYCE WAS BORN IN GEORGIA; THIS STORY TAKES PLACE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD. JUSTYCE WAS A VERY INTELLIGENT AND A HARD-WORKING STUDENT. JUSTYCE WAS EXPERIENCING RACISM AND LOTS OF INJUSTICE, SO HE STARTS TO WRITE LETTERS TO MARTIN LUTHER KING.
Who is Justyce?

CHALLENGES TRIALS
I tried to do a good deed and wound up on the ground in handcuffs. I thought if I made sure to an upstanding member of society, I'd be exempt from the stuff THOSE black guys deal with, you know? Really hard to swallow that I was wrong. Last night changed me.(pg 10-12)
Call to Adventure occurs when Justyce is slammed to ground in the very first chapter and placed in handcuffs. It takes him from hearing about racism and racial profiling to actually experiencing it. He expresses it in his letter to Martin. He starts to write to Martin after this incident as an experiment to see if it would help him to understand and deal with racism and inequality like Martin Luther King did in his time.
MENTOR
CALL TO ADVENTURE
I knew your punk a... was up to no good when I saw you walking down the road with a hood on. I know your kind. Punks like you wander the streets of nice neighborhoods searching for prey. Just couldn't resist this pretty little white girl who locked her keys in her car, could ya? (page 8)
It's hard to be a Black man, ain't? So what you gonna do? Run away? You thing coming back here gonna solve your problems? Goodbye Justyce I didnt raise you to punk out when the going gets rough. Get on outta here. pg 35-36
Justyce Crosses the Threshold by continuing to attend school despite his feelings since the incident. Justyce feels defeated from the handcuffing incident and ongoing discussions that he had in class about Equality in America. He feels that Jared and his friends are not very understanding, and he is upset that Manny agrees with them. He tries to return home and his mom refuses to let him and sends him back on his path.
THE SPECIAL WEAPON
Ma, Everything I'm doing right now feels like a losing battle. It's like a been here my whole high school career and I feel like an outsider ya know?
CROSSING THE THRESHOLD
JARED ACCUSING HIM OF BAD SCORES AND SAYS HE IS AHEAD BECAUSE OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION.
Justyce has several Challenges, the first one when he was racially profiled, Jared accused him of being ahead because of affirmative action and talked about his test scores, the news saying untrue things of him, and Trey is always downing him for being "smart".
Let's observe, shall we? I am ranked number two in the class, captain of the baseball team, got higher scores than Justyce, yet he got into Yale. (pg 59)
Darkest Moment
Doc was great mentor to Justyce. He gave him great advice on several occasions. The most important is the one he gave him when Justyce said "despite how good of a dude Martine was, they killed him. Doc tells him, "But I don't think knowing he'd be killed would've changed the way he lived". (pg151)
DOC
Justyce
MANNY IS ALSO A REALLY FOOR FRIEND TO JUSTYCE, MORE LIKE A BROTHER. MANNY ASKS JUSTYCE FOR ADVICE AND WHAT TO DO IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS.
I' ve been telling you since you were small you got to make a space for you in this world. (Mom pg 36)
Justyce's special weapon ends up being himself, his letters to Martin, his support: mom, SJ, Doc. Realizing that what he was looking for all along was within himself.
TRANSFORMATION
Whether you believe it or not, she brings the best out in me. When I'm with her, I want to overcome everything. (about SJ pg 182)
Dear Martin, He's Gone. Never did anything to anyone, and Now Manny's gone. I can't do this anymore. (pg 124)27 days, that's how long the Riveras keep Manny's body in a Mortuary cold chamber, waiting for his best friend to recover enough to attend the funeral. (pg 125)
Justyce's Darkest Moment is when his best friend Manny is shot.
JUSTYCE LOSES ONE OF HIS BEST FRIENDS, MANNY. HE NOW THINKS ABOUT WHAT TO DO NEXT, AND DOESNT KNOW WHAT TO DO.
I can’t let these terrible things happen to me.
THE TRANSFORMATION
THE END
SINCE HE NOW LOST HE BEST FRIEND, HE THINKS 2X HARDER SMARTER. HE DOESNT WANT TO END UP LIKE MANNY.
MANNY
But I have time!
Justyce is transformed when he realizes that he had been asking the wrong question. Instead of what would Martin do, who would Martin be?
Well, that's easy, you'd be yourself. The eminent MLK, nonviolent, not easily discouraged, and firm in your beliefs. And maybe that's my problem, I haven't figured out who I am or what I believe yet (pg 202)
JUSTYCE AND SJ CONNECTS ONCE AGAIN. SJ AND JUSTYCE NOW TALKS ABOUT WHAT TO DO FROM NOW ON. JUSTYCE NOW IS FEELING BETTER AND KNOWS WHAT TO DO
You have time!
We should chill sometime. You should come with me to New York one weekend or somethin. (pg 208)
JUSTYCE GOES HOME TO VISIT MANNY'S GRAVE. JARED IS AT MANNY’S GRAVE. THEY TALK ABOUT MANNY AND HOW GOOD OF A PERSON HE WAS. THEY NOW BECOME FRIENDS.
RETURNING HOME
It's why I come here, every time I come home. He was my first real friend. (pg 206)I'd really like that, Justyce. (pg 208)
JUSTYCE SAW JARED AT THE GRAVE SITE AND DOESNT WANT TO GO. BUT HE KNOWS MANNY DOESNT WANT HIM TO BE SAD ALL THE TIME. SO HE GOES
