Storyboard Text

  • Plants make their own food through the process of photosynthesis.
  • One of the products of photosynthesis is oxygen!
  • The equation for photosynthesis is:Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
  • Oxygen is gradually built up in the atmosphere.Eventually, the amount of oxygen present in the atmosphere allowed animals to evolve.
  • Carbon dioxide dissolved to create soluble carbonate compounds when the oceans formed, hence its amount in the atmosphere fell.
  • Carbonate compounds, such as limestone, were then precipitated as sedimentary rocks.
  • Carbon dioxide was absorbed by photosynthetic algae and plants from the waters. Many of these species were transformed into fossil fuels, such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas.
  • Coal is a fossil fuel that was created by trees in in low-lying wetland environments. Flooding caused the wood of the trees to be buried, preventing oxidation, and eventually compression and heating turned the wood into coal.
  • Simple plants and tiny animals living in oceans and lakes gave rise to crude oil and natural gas. These tiny organisms died, and their remains sunk to the bottom and were buried beneath sediments. Oxidation was inhibited due to a lack of oxygen.
  • Heat and pressure transformed the remains of the organisms into crude oil and natural gas over millions of years.
