  • In the early 1950s in the south most buses were segregated with many rules against blacks. Such as if a Black was in a seat a white wanted they would be forced to move seats. Blacks couldn't even occupy the same rows as a white person. even if the row was full they would all have to move for the one white person.
  • On December,1 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat. This sparked a bus boycott.
  • The Bus Boycott was a 13 month period of where african Americans wouldn't use the bus until they stopped the spree butt equal rule on buses.
  • 4 days later the people chose Martin Luther King .Jr to lead the boycott. He was priest of a small Alabama Church for blacks.
  • it ended on December 20 1956 when the separate but equal law was finally abolished in buses. Blacks where finally allowed to sit wherever they wanted. It was also the first big win for the civil rights movement.
  • Even though the bus boycott was a huge success the civil rights movement was far from over. Racism still existed especially in the deep south. But the bus boycott helped end it. The civil rights movement wouldn't officially end until 1968.
