- Dad we are reading a book in AP world about empires and I dont even know what an empire is

- An empire is basically a group or territories under the control of one leader
- Oh ok, wouldnt the USA be an empire too? Since all the states are under the presidents control

- Which is true but I'D like to say that each state is free. For the most part the Governor controls the state.
- So some people say that the US is an empire because, like you said, it is controlled by one president figure

- You can take the roman empire as an example. Augustus Ceaser ruled over many territories which all belonged to only him...So those countrys had to follow his rules
