- The British East India Company arrived in India as spice importers, expressly to partake in the East Indian spice trade. Cotton, silk, indigo, saltpeter, tea, and opium were also included to its goods, and it also engaged in the human trafficking. On August 24, 1608, they arrived on the Indian subcontinent at the port of Surat.
- Hey we have some spices that we want to trade!
- hmm alright...
- By the 1720s, the Mogul Empire was in shambles. Several European countries vied for authority in India, seeking relationships with the fragile nations that had inherited the Mogul domains.
- We WANT control over India!!!
- Well we also want control, we are more powerful!!!
- The East India Company established its own army in India, which was composed of British troops as well as native soldiers called sepoys. Britain started expanding theirs control in India. British citizens began to establish an Anglo-Indian civilization within India, and English habits were adapted to the Indian environment. The East India Company greatly increased its control, including establishing a judicial system.
