- October 1962, part of the Cold War. Soviet Union vs. USA. Conflict lasted 13 days.
- Cuba was only 90 miles from the USA
- A U.S aircraft flew over Cuba and took pictures showing sights for medium and intermediate-range ballistic nuclear missiles under construction.
- U.S ships surround Cuba and forms a "quarantine"/ blockade.
- It was the closest that the 2 countries came to nuclear war and almost started WW3.
- Additional US flights over Cuba showed Soviet missile sites nearing completion.
- Over the next several days, the Soviet Union accused the US of active aggression.
- The US moved towards a military strike on Cuba to take out the missiles.
- There seemed to be interest by the Soviet Union to come to an agreement where the Soviets would remove the missiles if the US promised not to invade Cuba. The next day the Soviet Union demanded that any proposed deal must include the removal of US missiles from Turkey. Later that day a US jet was shot down over Cuba.
- In 1963, a direct "hot line" was installed between Washington and Moscow to prevent similar situations, and the two countries signed two treaties related to nuclear weapons.
- Disaster was avoided when the US agreed to the Soviet's offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the US promising not to invade Cuba. The US also agreed to remove US missiles from Turkey.
