- Where is your sagacity? Did you even care to listen to the man's stifled voice before his death?
- After all the years you worked for him, I can't believe you would have the audacity to murder him! Are you mad? We are bringing you down to the station.
- You are a mad man! You shall be sentenced to death. It doesn't matter whether you were profound in your workings or not!
- This man is insane!
- Yes, I killed the old man, but my plan was genius! I even watched him sleep for eight nights in the crevice of the door! I suffocated him and chopped him up in the tub so that there was no mess! It was the perfect murder.
- I will escape at my last meal!
- I escaped to prove my genius! I have committed the crime of all crimes! They won't arrest me, they will praise me! I know! I will write a story and then no one will think I'm mad!
- "True! — nervous — very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?"
