  • Closed Caption: Welcome to EDRG 3315. This course is typically taught on campus (face-to-face). This semester; however, is going to be different.
  • Student's Home (Indoor)
  • I am your instructor, Dr. Pittman. I typically teach this course where we are all in one room together. The entire course will be online. This storyboard will demonstrate my expectations for class discussions in this course.
  • Student's Cell Phone
  • EDRG 3315: Discussion PostDo you think phonemic awareness should be taught? Explain your answer.
  • You will participate in a variety of class discussions in the course. Because we will not be meeting face-to-face, you will complete these while at home (or the place where you obtain the internet).
  • Student's Tablet
  • You will need access to a personal computing device.
  • Student's Computer
  • EDRG 3315: Discussion PostHow do you plan to teach children to read? Provide specific details.
  • When participating in the discussions, the discussions would be authentic as if you were meeting together, face-to-face, talking in a group.
  • Critical Thinking
  • As the instructor, I will be present in your group discussions by providing discussion prompts, feedback, and posing questions.
  • You may participate in the discussions via a cell phone,
  • smart notebook, such as an iPad,
  • EDRG 3315 Discussion Post

  • Student Preparing to Post to the Discussion Board
  • Dr. Pittman participation in discussions.
  • EDRG 3315 Discussion Question: Which method is the best for teaching young children the alphabet?
  • Grading Discussions
  • Being Socially Present- Purpose of the Discussion Posts
  • When you read the discussion prompt, consider Paul-Elder Model of Critical Thinking. Ask yourself questions, such as, "Is my inference logical, Do I need to gather more information, and What is the question I am trying to answer"?
  • Additionally, before you post, make sure you are respectful of other participants by following the dispositions listed in the syllabus. Some dispositions include: hospitality, mindfulness, participation, and humility.
  • I will interact with you during your discussions to ensure you are thinking critically. I will pose questions, such as "Can you elaborate further and Could you be more specific". You will be required to answer the questions that I pose, as well.
  • Your discussions will be grading using the Critical Thinking Grading Rubric for Discussions. Expect a one-week grading period to receive feedback on your discussion posts.
  • The goal of being social present is to establish yourself as an individual and build relationships that allow you to engage in a community of inquiry. Discussion posts build higher-order thinking, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills by allowing your to hear multiple perspectives and challenging those perspectives.
