Storyboard Text

  • Today, we will show you the ways that rocks like us are made.
  • Hi! My name is Rocky.
  • Those rocks are called igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary..
  • And I'm Terra.
  • We will be talking about the three main rock types.
  • First, let's talk about how igneous rock forms.
  • Igneous forms whenever magma or lava slowly comes up the volcano or is erupted out of the volcano. Then it is cooled when it comes into contact with air and forms Igneous rock.
  • What can happen in the volcano is how fast the movement of the lava is in the volcano can determine it's texture. For example if the lava moves fast and spews out the volcano, then its gonna cool faster because it came in contact with air faster. The texture it would gain from this is called coarse-grained.
  • Sometimes when igneous rocks are cooling down, they can mix with other minerals. An example of this rock is called granite. The crystals or minerals that form with the igneous rock can be really big or really small. Igneous rocks, like granite, can last up to 50,000 years until they move to the next stage of the cycle.
  • Now we're at a river. This is where the next rock is formed, sedimentary.
  • Water and wind are a big part in the production of sedimentary rocks. These two forces are called weathering. The way water turns rocks into sedimentary rocks is by beating the rocks in the current of the water until it turns into sediment. The sediment is then carried down the stream through erosion until the sediments settle at the bottom of the stream.
