Settlers and Shuttlers

- How many of us like blueberries? Especially blueberry pancakes? Would you want to not be able to have blueberries that are harvested in the US or that potentially cost Ten dollars per pound?
- Trends show that fewer and fewer migrant workers are following the traditional seasonal harvests
- There have become two distinct groups that have fallen out of the migratory worker population; settlers and shuttlers. Settlers are those that still work in agriculture within 75 miles of the original farm they began working. Shuttlers have sought other vocational opportunities often times within forty-five miles of their base farms.
- Empirical data has shown the decline in migrant workers entering agriculture and becoming more stationary over time.
- The overarching reason for this is due to the want of these workers to have homes, settled down, raise families and have brighter futures for their families than the ones that they had.
- Current U.S. immigration doctrine and policy is also curtailing the number of migrant workers that are arriving into the United States that can be drawn from as a vital part of the agricultural labor force.
- With fewer workers to staff and harvest crops, farmers and US citizens are at a crossroads where we must choose between either paying higher food bills or choosing to fund some means by which those costs of production can be mitigated.
- By continuing to promote STEM programs at the Elementary and secondary school levels for the first generation of Settler's and Shuttler's children we will be offering them a greater opportunity to work in areas outside of agriculture.
- Through a further educational opportunity program that would directly benefit farmer's and their children, we would look to introduce a scholarship/aid package designed to promote the education of farmer's children who wish to pursue careers in agricultural sciences.
- By studying advances in agriculture such as vertical growth, hydro-ponics, crop rotation and auto harvesting techniques, the offspring of today's farmers and Settler's and Shuttler's can provide for a prosperous and bountiful future for our global economy.
- By coming together and working as one people with a clear goal to make the global economy work for the greater good based on educating those that are in need of education and advancing futures and working smarter and not harder to provide for a growing global community, we must act with the good faith as global citizens.
