John Deere, the blacksmith who founded Deere and Company, was born in Rutland, VT in 1804. In 1837, Deere developed and manufactured the first commercial cast-steel plow, revolutionizing the farming industry.
The capital of Vermont is Montpelier. Some other major cities include Burlington, Essex, South Burlington, Colchester, and Rutland.
Vermont's nickname is the Green Mountain State. Its state motto is, "Freedom and Unity".

The first Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory was built in Waterbury, VT in 1985. Its tours, tasting areas, and famous retired flavors graveyard make it a popular tourist destination. The factory still produces over 350,000 pints of ice cream a day!
