Admitted into the Union
September 9, 1850
Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, starting one of the biggest gold rushes in history. Over 300,000 people moved to California between the years 1848 and 1855.
California was the 31st state admitted into the Union on September 9, 1850.
First Transcontinental Railroad
Originally known as the "Pacific Railroad", the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869. It connected California to the east, allowing fast transportation of goods and products.
The Great San Francisco Earthquake
On April 18, 1906, San Francisco's largest earthquake left over 225,000 people homeless, and many people lost their lives. The earthquake rated 7.8 on the Richter scale.
Disneyland
Walt Disney's first park officially opened on July 17, 1955 in Anaheim, California.
