Historical Events: Iowa
French Canadians Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette are the first non-Natives to come to Iowa.
Lewis and Clark
The land is exceptional!
Louisiana Purchase
Explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are sent to scope out the new territory. After a good report, many people began settling in Iowa.
Iowa was part of the 15 million dollar Louisiana Purchase, when the United States bought a great deal of land from France.
The Louisiana Purchase included South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and parts of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Minnesota, and Louisiana.
The Black Hawk War
So many Europeans were settling in Iowa that the Native American tribes were being forced out. They fought for their land in the Black Hawk War, but they lost.
Statehood
Iowa was the 29th state admitted into the Union on December 28, 1846.
Iowa became a state in 1846.
President Hoover
Herbert Hoover, who is an Iowa native, becomes the 31st president of the United States.
