- Della and Mr. James Dillingham Young (Jim) are partners that live together in a small flat. They are going through rough times financially after Jim started working for less pay and especially since it had been Christmas Eve.
- Climax
- I cut it so I could get a present for you Jim!
- Since it had been Christmas Eve Della wanted to get Jim a prefect gift, but she only had a dollar and eighty seven cents. Della had to find a way to earn money fast.
- Falling Action
- Della quickly comes up with an idea to earn money, by selling her knee length hair to earn $20 to by Jim a gift. She decided to sell her long locks that she and Jim both adored.
- Resolution
- Let's put our gifts aside. You can put the porkchops on now.
- Jim arrives home and Della shows him her gift she got for him, a platinum chain to keep his watch on at the cost of cutting of her hair.
- Jim reveals to Della that he sold his beloved heirloom, a gold watch to acquire money to purchase her a set of combs for her lengthy hair.
- I sold my watch to buy you combs.
- Jim and Della realize each of them sacrificed the possession they both adored most, in order to purchase a Christmas gift to for one another.
