- The Discovery 1722
- Captain James Cook Arrives 1774
- The French Arrive 1786
- Dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, discovered Easter Island. It was inhabited by Rapa Nui, The Polynesian name for Easter Island. It was rediscovered by the Spanish in 1770 when the population was approx 3000.
- The First Settling 1868
- Following a civil war, Cook arrived to find a decimated population of under 1000. The people no longer worshipped the statues which had been largely overthrown.
- Annexed By Chile 1965
- A French navigator arrived and failed to introduce domestic animals to the island.Following a slave raid and Smallpox epidemic population dropped from 2000 to 111 by 1877.
- Easter Island Today
- In 1864 a French Catholic Missionary was the first foreigner to settle on Easter Island and by 1868 the population of the island was completely Christian.
- In 1888 the island was annexed by Chile. By the year 1965 a civilian Governor was appointed by the Chilean Government and everyone living on the island became Chilean.
- Easter islanders have managed to retain their customs despite modernising. Annually,in February, they hold arts contests to revive their heritage, with reed-boat building,carving, singing and dancing
