  • Abigail is vengeful, selfish, manipulative, and a magnificent liar. This young lady seems to be uniquely gifted at spreading death and destruction wherever she goes.
  • Abigail is revealed as strong-willed and independent. She has been dancing - and practicing magic - in the woods, and she is not ashamed of it.

  • Reverend Hale
  • 
  • Hale's reputation of good sense, he is perhaps tainted by pride. He is called upon as an expert in his field, and we are told 'he felt the pride of the specialist whose unique knowledge has at last been publicly called for.
  • characteristics: He is a young minister dedicated to vanquishing witchcraft, but he is also somewhat naive. He has a critical mind and strong intelligence, particularly in the study of his specialty.

  • Danforth is clearly an intelligent man, highly respected and successful.
  • He arrives in Salem to oversee the trials of the accused witches with a serene sense of his own ability to judge fairly.

  • She is believable to the girls, perhaps in part because she is so different from the norm in the Puritan community.
  • Tituba is also a very spirited, entertaining character.

  • Rebecca was a prominent and respected older woman in Puritan Salem, drawn into the witchcraft trials because of her and her husband's friction with the Putnams.
  • Nurse Rebecca is a wise, sensible, and upright woman, held in tremendous regard by most of the Salem community. Francis Nurse Farmer and landowner in Salem. He is a respected member of the community often called upon to settle disagreements between individuals.

  • Reverend Parris
  • 
  • Even when his own daughter was part of the dance in middle of the woods, he was more worried his reputation being hurt because of his daughter than the daughter's future or health.
  • Reverend Parris is a paranoid, power-hungry, yet oddly self-pitying figure. Many of the townsfolk, especially John Proctor, dislike him
  • Reverend Parris was more of an accusor
