Storyboard Text

  • You know, you should smile more
  • Really?!
  • It's so much effort, though. Did you know that it can take up to 17 muscles to smile?
  • It's around here
  • Yeah, and it depends on how much you're smiling; just turning up the corners of your mouth, for instance, uses only your zygomaticus major muscle.
  • On the other hand, a Duchenne's smile also uses the orbicularis oculi muscles to crinkle the corners of the eyes into crows' feet. The risorius muscle may also be involved for some people, and it creates dimples.
  • Orbicularis Oculi
  • Risorius
  • Frowning, however, can be a little more complicated. It mainly uses the depressor anguli oris to pull down the corners of the mouth, but also the procerus to pull the eyebrows down and together, the mentalis to pull up the chin, or the orbicularis oris to protrude the lips for a pouty lip.
  • Orbicularis Oris
  • Mentalis
  • Procerus
  • Depressor Anguli Oris
  • So why are you frowning if it takes more muscles?
  • I guess you have a point, haha.
