- Duke Orsino is pining for Lady Olivia, surrounded by his courtiers, who try to cheer him up, He speaks of his love for Olivia in poetic terms, and mentions he sent Cesario to convey his feelings to Olivia but not expecting a positive response
- In Act 1, Scene 2 of Twelfth Night, the Duke Orsino speaks with his courtier, Cesario, about his unrequited love for the Lady Olivia. Orsino expresses his despair at not being able to win Olivia's love, and asks Cesario to go to her on his behalf and plead his case. Cesario, who is actually Viola in disguise, agrees to do so, but is secretly in love with Orsino himself.
- In Act 1, Scene 3 of Twelfth Night, Viola, who has survived a shipwreck and washed up on the shore of Illyria, and is disguised as a man named Cesario, is discussing her plan to enter Duke Orsino's service to grieve her supposed drowned twin brother Sebastian, and be close to the Duke. The Captain agrees to help her and this sets the stage for Viola's disguise and involvement in the play's romantic plot.
