- A letter was sent by 13 Maori chiefs from the Bay of Islands to King William IV. It was to seek protection against the French.
- 1835
- James Busby Arrives in NZ, and was appointed British Resident. He was described 'warship without guns' due to the fact he had no army or police force to protect him.
- He Whakaputanga
- United Tribes Flags was Chosen. It was recognized#160;by the British King and became a national flag for ships from New Zealand.
- 1839
- He Whakaputanga Declared.
- More signatures were added, and had grown to 52 signatures.
