Storyboard Text

  • Scene 1: Judging Too Soon
  • Oh my goodness! Is that a tattoo!!??
  • Hello!! My sweet baby Sarah!!
  • Hi Auntie!!....I didn't know you were coming over?!
  • Why is she looking at my funny? Oh no, did she see my tattoo! Mom always said her family wouldn't approve.
  • Scene 2: Rules and Beliefs
  • First the hair now this!!
  • How dare you let your daughter get a tattoo!!
  • Well Hello Sarah! How was sch.....
  • How can she think so low of me? I didn't do anything wrong.
  • Scene 3: Conflicting Opinions
  • Wait till my mom hears about this. She will think her granddaughter is a criminal!
  • Just because you believe something doesn't mean I have done anything wrong!
  • Wait! Hold on!
  • Sarah is just getting back from school when she sees her aunt who must have stopped by for a visit. Sarah was initially very excited to see her until she sees that her aunt has a shocked look on her face. Sarah had recently gotten a tattoo that symbolizes her older sister who had sadly passed away last year. Although it took her parents a while to allow her to get one as she knew her mom's side of the family was strict.
  • Scene 4: The Labeling Theory
  • What!!! She is a Misfit! People will never associate with her!
  • Because the Aunt was quick to judge and criticize she has led to the conclusion that her niece is a bad kid, that she has done something wrong. These small acts can be characterized as deviance which can be called social diversions.
  • Scene 5: Shame
  • I'm sorry to do this but if you truly believe that this is okay, I don't know if we can be around you. We must leave now.
  • Sarah's Aunt has pre-existing opinions about how a person should act and exist in society, scientifically called norms, which is why some may consider acts deviant while others see them as normal. Sarah and her parents see no problem in dyeing your hair and getting a tattoo as in their opinion be a healthy way of expressing yourself, while the aunt had a different idea.
  • Scene 6: Punishment
  • She is ruining her life. This is just the beginning.
  • As the grandma hears what Sarah has done, and that her daughter has allowed it she is to do the extreme and call her granddaughter a misfit, this action is called Labelling Theory, that the act its self is not wrong but the person believes the deviate has broken a rule.
  • What's going on!! Mom it's not a bad thing! She did it for her sister!
  • MOM! Sarah has a tattoo!
  • In this scene Sarah's mother is defending her, telling her mother that she has done nothing wrong. Her mother may see it as deviance but it is most certainly not a crime. This shows the difference between Deviance and Crime, and how some may take the extreme with their beliefs.
  • How dare you. She is not a criminal, she is a young girl and even if you think she has done something wrong, we love her.
  • Because of both the grandmother's and the aunt's norms and beliefs, they have decided that the best thing to do is to shun them, although this is severe punishment and it is not always as strong, this Is known as informal punishment, where the law is not being broken.
  • Goodbye, hopefully one day you will learn.
