Storyboard Text

  • American sailors underwent Impressment from the British. British sailors would seize US ships and force the crew on board to join their ships and the British navy. One incident entitled the Chesapeake Affair saw British ships fire shots at a US ship after it refused a search by the British sailors.

  • Britain set up a blockade, forcing America to sail to the UK first before trading with any other European country in order to halt US trade. President Jefferson responded by creating the Embargo Act of 1807, which decreased foreign trade to prevent further exploitation, as well as impressment, by the British
  • Must come here to trade first!

  • War Hawks advocated for war with Britain because of impressment of sailors, Native American relations with Britain, and to take control of British Canada. Federalists opposed war.
  • The Battle of Detroit saw General Hull retreat from Canada to Detroit where the British laid siege for many days. General Hull surrenders on August 16, 1812.
  • British soldiers in Washington DC burn down the White House, but Dolley Madison saves paintings and important papers from the building before it burns down.
  • During the Battle of Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key writes the first lines to the national anthem Star Spangled Banner.
  • The US and Britain signed the Treaty of Ghent, which did not exchange land between the two parties, and Canada-US borders were discussed. The US had its own meeting, the Hartford Convention, which discussed future relations with Britain, removing the three-fifths compromise, and adding states to the Union. Americans were very pleased and US nationalism was boosted greatly.
