Storyboard Text

  • Elizabeth Schwann,his mother.
  • Birth
  • Theodor Schwann
  • Theodor Schwann was born in Neuss, Germany on December 7th, 1810.
  • Leonard Schwann, his father.
  • Pepsin
  • Theodor Schwann discovered pepsin in 1835. He discovered it while studying digestive processes when he realized that as well as hydrochloric acid there is a further substance in the stomach that aids the digestion of food. Then in 1836, he named this enzyme pepsin.
  • Microbes, Yeast, and Fermentation
  • Theodor Schwann was born to Leonard and Elizabeth Schwann in Neuss Prussia (Germany) on December 7th, 1810.
  • Schwann Cells
  • Theodor Schwann discovered pepsin, a stomach enzyme that serves to digest proteins found in ingested food.
  • Schwann's Book
  • Theodor Schwann by Zach Schaner
  • Microscopical Researches into the Accordance in the Structure and Growth of Animals and plants
  • Schwann identified the role of microorganisms in putrefaction and alcohol fermentation. In 1836, he had gathered enough evidence to convince himself that the conversion of sugar to alcohol during fermentation was a biological process that required the action of a living substance (yeast) rather than a chemical process of sugar oxidation.
  • Jobs and College
  • Schwann studied peripheral never cells and in doing so he discovered a new type of cell surrounding the axons and neurons of nerve fibers. The cells he discovered are now called Schwann cells.
  • Theodor Schwann released a book called "Microscopical research into the Accordance in the Structure and Growth of Animals and Plants". His book described the cellular structure of plants and animals and the development of adult cells. It proposed the cell theory. Meaning that all living things are made of cells and all animal tissues are built up from a basic cell structure in the same way as plants are.
  • Theodor Schwann worked as an anatomist, which is a person who specializes in anatomy. Anatomy is the identification and description of the structure of living things. He was also a physiologist. A physiologist is someone who specializes in physiology. Physiology is the branch of biology that deals with the normal functions of living organisms and their parts. He went to University of Bonn and Universiry of Wurzberg, where he began medical studies. He also graduated from university of Berlin and became a physiologist.
