  • Causes of the War
  • The War of 1812
  • Trouble with Native Americans
  • Land Battles
  • There were many causes of the War od 1812. The first being, President Madison cut off trade with Britain due to an agreement with France. We stop trading with Britain, they stop ceasing our ships. Another reason was British soldiers and sailors were seizing America's cargo and sailors. The third reason was because American believed that Britain has been encouraging Native Americans to attack America. Finally, America wanted to expand their land, and one way is to expand in Canada.
  • Sea Battles
  • Americans started settling into Ohio and around the Mississippi River, which was pushing the Indians off their land. Two Shawnee Indians (Tecumseh and Prophet) tried to fight for their land back by uniting Indians along the Mississippi River. On November 7th, 1811, a militia force led by William Henery Harrison fought against them. Harrison's men defeated the Indians but discovered something shocking. The Indians had been using British weapons.
  • The Battle of New Orleans
  • Between 1812 and 1814, America tried to force their way in Canada. They went back and forth between being pushed in and out, until eventually they lost that battle and Britian regained control of Canada. In August 1814, British soldiers invaded Washington D.C. and burned down many buildings, including the White House and Capital. President Madison and many others had to flee for their lives.
  • Results of the War
  • Many sea battles occurred during the War od 1812, an example being a U.S. naval force under Oliver Hazard Perry's command that captured a British flee of six ships. Another example being the Chesapeake, where British soldiers opened fire on an American boat. They ten seize four sailors, one of which ended up dead.
  • After the battle on Lake Erie, Britain decided to invade New Orleans. They confidently marched into battle with over 7,500 troops. When they got there, they were met with deadly fire from a militia of around 7,500 Americans, Indians, pirates, and African Americans all led by General Andrew Jackson. In the end, around 2,000 British soldiers died and only 20 American soldiers died. Americans thought of this as the greatest victory of the War of 1812, however it was unnecessary due to the treaty that had just been signed to end the war. This news did not reach either army until after the battle.
  • The War of 1812 resulted in weakened Indian resistance in the Northwest Territory. 20 years after the war, the U.S. government will force most Indians who fought with Techmseh west of the Mississippi River. It also badly damaged the Federalists party due to their opposition in the war. Finally, it just generally uplifted everybody’s spirit and patio rim. Some even called this war “the second war of independence.”
