  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences.
  • You scared rabbits, you!
  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is, Blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences. One example that supports this theme is when the residents of Maple Street swarm and converge around Les Goodman's porch to keep watch over him. The reason this supports the theme is because doing this action raised suspicion between all neighbors being the alien or monster as well. This may have destroyed friendships and trusts between the residents. Another example is when Pete Van Horn was coming back from Floral Street in the dark. This supports the theme because while everyone was scared because they thought he could have been the monster, Charlie got scared, shot him, and killed him. This was because he was so scared thinking he was the alien. One last example is in the last scene when everybody was screaming and yelling at each other who they thought was the alien, and blaming everyone for being the monster. This shows that if lots of people all blame each other at once, trying to find a scapegoat, it can lead to chaos and destruction, just like Maple street was destroyed by its own residents.
