  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear and Suspicion can cause people to turn on each other.
  • .
  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Sterling is that Fear and Suspicion can cause people to turn on each other. One example that supports this theme is when Les Goodman's car mysteriously starts by itself(page 76), and everyone in the neighborhood except for Steve and Mrs.Goodman believe that Les is the monster. This shows that by the neighborhood becoming suspicious of Les, they turn on him and do not be nice to him for the rest of the story. Another example is when Charlie, who is very hot headed, shot and killed Pete Van Horn(83). This shows that Charlie being suspicious and mostly scared of a dark figure approaching him, so he turns on his neighbor and kills him without thinking. Lastly, when the neighborhood is killing each other and the real aliens are shown they talk about how all they need to do is turn off some lights and the people will find scapegoats and kill each other. This evidence shows that humans will find a reason to turn on each other from suspicion. In conclusion, the best theme to explain The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is Fear and Suspicion can cause people to turn on each other.
