Storyboard Text

  • Look Katie, an ambulance!
  • Why do the sirens sound different the further the ambulance goes?
  • That's because of the Doppler Effect
  • What's that?
  • The Doppler effect happens because sound transmits through the air as a series of repeated vibrations known as sound waves. Soundwaves have wavelengths which is the distance between two points.
  • I think i get it, can you just try to explain that one more time.
  • When the ambulance is not moving, the wavelength will be the same in every direction so you will hear the same pitch until the ambulance starts moving. As the ambulance starts moving, the wavelength increases and that's why you hear a lower pitch.
