Storyboard Text

  • Friends, can you direct me to the palace of the king, or better yest to the king himself.?
  • This is his palace. The king is inside. This is his wife, the mother of his children.
  • Greeting to you ! Your kind words deserve a kind reply. Why have you come? What is your news?.
  • It is good both for the king and the Royal House.
  • What is is? How can there be both joy and pain ? Is not the aged Polybus still king? The father if Oedipus is dead? Quick! Take this news to my lord.
  • The people of Corinth have resolved to make Oedipus their king. My lady, polybus, he is dead and in his grave.. If I tell a lie may I die myself.
  • who is he? What is his news? What? Let me hear it, stranger, from your mouth. Did he die by treachery or from disease?
  • Corinth has sent a messenger to deliver news to Oedipus the king and the Royal House. The messenger states that "the I he bring will bring joy, though they are not without some pain"... Meaning the news he has come to deliver, is good, but sad.
  • Hear this man, and as he speaks think of what has become of he solemn prophecies! He has come from Corinth, and his news is this: Your father Polybus is dead.
  • Did he die by treachery or from disease? Then the poor man died of sickness. Ha! Oh my wife, where are the oracles now ? Why believe in the screams of whirling birds? The Delphic god had sworn that I killed my father. But he is dead in his grave! And here I stand, I never drew my sword. Perhaps they might argue that he died of grief for his long absent son. But only in that sense could I have killed him. But no... the oracles are dead. Like Polybus, their words are turned to dust.
  • The chorus's has showed the messenger where to find the king, and also gets introduced to Oedipus's wife, Jocasta/ mother of his children. Jocasta is really confused on why the messenger has come, so she starts to question him. The messenger tells her that he has some "good news, but will bring sadness".
  • It cannot be said more plainly. Polybus is dead. It takes so little to put this man to rest. Yes. He had lived a long life.
  • Apollo once prophesied that I would lie with my own mother and with these hands kill my father. This is why for all these years I have stayed away from Corinth. I traveled far but always longed to see my parents faces. Are you saying polybus was not my father? But you are nothing to me . Why then did he call me son? Was I a foundling.. did you buy me?
  • The messenger finally states that " The people of Corinth have resolved to make Oedipus their king". This is because the king Polybus/ Oedipus's father has passed away. Jocasta is very shocked and immediately tells him he has to take the news to Oedipus. Jocasta was already knowing something was going on because why else would the people of Corinth deliver a message that is GOOD, but SAD.
  • . Then, my son, you do not know what you are doing. IS this why your afraid to come home?. Polybus has no blood ties to you. No more your father than I am. And neither was he. Long ago I gave you to him as a gift. He had no children of his own. I found you in the woods of Cithaeron.I confess I hoped to profit when you returned to Corinth. Well since I cam to bring you pleasure, why should I not free you from this fear?
  • Everything makes sense now! Things are starting to connect!
  • You are a mere man... the plaything of fate. You cannot know the future.
  • Jocasta leads the messenger towards Oedipus the king. Oedipus is curious on who the man, so Jocasta tells him to listen up and to hear what the man has to say. Instead of the messenger being able to tell Oedipus about king polybus death. Jocasta says to Oedipus" He has come from Corinth, and his news is this: Your father Polybus is dead.Oedipus doesn't really seem to be believing what Jocasta has said because it is shocking, so he says he wants to hear those words come out of the messenger of Corinth speak.
  • Once the man has spoken the truth about polybus's death, Oedipus starts to question his death. Then realizes polybus died by old age because he had lived such a long life. Oedipus feels relieved that he did not kill his polybus because Delphic god felt like Oedipus killed polybus the king, so he gets a little elevated about the situation.
  • The messenger tells Oedipus that he was not the biological son of King Polybus. The messenger says that he found Oedipus in the woods of Cithaeron and gave Oedipus to king polybus as a gift because he had no children of his own. Oedipus started to question his childhood.Jocasta realizes the truth from the conversation they were having and immediately tries to stop Oedipus from knowing his future, but Oedipus continues to question.
