Storyboard Beskrivning

According to research, talking to toddlers and babies can shape early brain development. Many people believe that just because a baby cannot communicate, they do not understand conversations and cannot learn words but communication with babies and children in general helps them develop skills that will later allow them to effectively communicate with others.

Storyboard Text

  • Hi Doctor, thank you for seeing us in such short notice, I am concerned because my son is 3 years old and he doesnt speak properly. He doesn't like to talk to me, he doesnt even turn to look at me when I speak to him. He is supposed to learn from PBS and Disney channels on the TV but he is not even learning to talk!
  • Do you speak to him frequently? Do spend time with your child around the house? or he only watches TV. What does he do on a normal day around the house?
  • Since he was born, I have worked full time so he spends most of the time with his grandma. Since his grandmother does'nt know English, I told her to let him watch PBS and Disney channels most of the day. I come late from work, usually after his bed time so I do not see him often. I feel like he does not know me!
  • But..I though he was still too little to notice if I spend time with him or talk to him. He doesn't know the difference between the TV or a live person right? I don't think he knows the difference.
  • Important brain development occurs when parents talk, read and sing to their children. Lack of communication weakens emotional relationships. It can make your child feel unsafe and unsure about sharing their concerns, ideas, and feelings.it does not matter what age he is, speaking and reading to your children from birth will help them build a strong vocabulary.
  • Having conversations with your child is very important. It promotes communication and language development. It also supports social and emotional development. You need to start spending and having conversations with him.
  • I had no idea that speaking to our children had such an impact in their brain development and well being. I feel so bad, from now on, I will speak to both of my babies. With this conversation I learned that Communication with children and babies is essential to their future relationships and development
  • I am glad we had this conversation. You can read more on this topic on https://news.mit.edu.MIT,cognitive scientists have found that conversation between an adult and a child appears to change the child’s brain, you can turn this situation around as it is not too late to build a strong relationship with your children and help them develop good communication skills.
