- In anticipation of war with the French, who had a trading settlement in Chandernagore, British started fortifying Calcutta. Siraj-Ud-Daulah ordered both the British and French to dismantle their fortifications but the British disagreed and didn't dismantle their fortification.
- Robert Clive hatched a plot with some influential men of the nawab's court to overthrow Siraj-Ud-Daulah. Mir Jafar who was the commander in chief of the nawab's army would be made the the Nawab of Bengal in return for a large amount of money and important trading privileges.
