"'Poor old Mrs. Lucky. Poor troubled Mrs. Special,' she said. 'Maybe I should go out and get myself AIDS. Then everyone can come fawning around me and—'"( 41.60)
The theme of Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt is that jealousy drives people apart. This theme develops throughout the novel as the characters interact with each other. Danni is jealous of Finn, Greta is jealous of Finn, and Greta is jealous of June. With each interaction, the characters grow farther and farther apart and begin to resent each other. Jealousy will cause these once close relationships to turn into a hateful relationships over time.
Theme Development #3
“Maybe I don’t want to be great. Maybe I want to be average. At everything. Maybe I want to be like you.”(54.13)
This cell is described by June's father. It represents how Danni hated getting Finn's postcards because it made her jealous that he was living out her dreams. June's dad says, “I think your mother was embarrassed about the way things had turned out. Embarrassed that she’d gone and become an accountant." (39.56) Later, when Finn returns home famous, Danni is still upset and jealous. This drove their previously very close relationship apart. Danni's jealousy develops the theme by showing how jealousy can drive people apart.
Thematic Prediction
This cell happens after the party. While drunk, Greta admits to June that she is jealous of Finn. She is asking, do I have get AIDS for you to care about me? Greta's jealousy makes her a mean person towards June. Many times throughout the novel, it is pointed out that before June became close with Finn, Greta and June were best friends. Greta's jealousy towards Finn drove them apart. This develops the theme by showing the negative effects of jealousy on a relationship.
This cell takes place when Greta admits to June that she is jealous of her. They used to be very close, but now hate each other. This is because of Greta's jealousy towards June. This moment develops the theme because Greta's jealousy drove them apart. If Greta hadn't let jealousy get in the way of her relationship with June, they would still be friends. Her jealousy is what drove them apart and ruined their relationship.
I think that Greta's jealousy has permanently affected her relationship with June. The theme of jealousy drives people apart has been shown between Greta and June many times. There will be no way to mend their relationship. I think that just like Dannie and Finn they will grow up still having that grudge.
