Storyboard Text

  • In 1162 Henry II assigned Thomas Becket as Archbishop of Canterbury. Becket and Theobald ( the previous Archbishop Of Canterbury) had been on several visits to the pope in Rome. Since Henry and becket had been good friends, Henry was confident that Becket would be supportive in him running the country.
  • Later on in 1162, Becket resigned from his position as chancellor since he wanted to increase the powers of the church .Henry wasn't happy about this and so their friendship broke down. In 1164, Henry tried to pass a set of laws called the constitutions of Clarendon. Which Becket refused to sign.

  • The aim of the new laws was to limit the power of the church and increase the kings influence over the bishops. Because Becket refused to agree to the changes, Henry tried to put Becket on trial for disobeying the king. Becket feared for his safety so he fled to France.
  • In June 1170, Henry was concerned on who would succeed him as king having seen the devastation that can occur. Therefore he made his son junior king in a coronation performed by the Archbishop Of York. Becket appealed to the pope and henry let Becket return to England . They became friends again.
  • Later Henry and Beckets friendship suffered because Becket would put the interests of the church above his friendship with Henry. He purposely angered Henry by excommunicating the bishops involved in the Junior Kings coronation.
  • "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest!"
  • on the other hand, Henry was not expecting his friend, Becket, to question his decisions and judgments when he appointed him as Archbishop. Henry was known to have a fierce temper and it was this outburst that led to Thomas Beckets death.
