- George, what are you doing in the day now?
- What are you reading?
- How many books are there on it?
- Am..I got a list of books in the library once, and now I'm gonnaread them this summer.
- I never counted them. Maybe around a hundred
- I'm staying home - but i'm reading a lot to pick up my education.Nothing much just right now. I'm waiting for job.
- George was a neighborhood boy who had quit high school on an impulse when he was sixteen. Although he was ashamed every time he went looking for a job, when people asked him if he had finished and he had to say no, he never went back to school/
- Still and all, one hundred books is a pretty big load for one summer.
- After you're finished with same, maybe you and I can shoot the breeze about them?

- I figure if I did that, it would help me in my education. I don't meanthe kind they give you in high school. I want to know different things than they learn there, if you know what I mean.
- George, like every night, sits on the bench in the park and thinks ... about a better life for himself.

- George, why do not you look at my newspapers and magazines?
- George lies to Mr. Cattanzara that he reads books and plans to read about 100 books in the summer. He is embarrassed and feels unhappy to lie to him but he wants Mr. Katanza to respect him, so he continues.

- George decided to stay away from Mr. Cattanzara until he had got some of his softback books read, but when he started them, they did not interest him and he did not bother to finish them. He lost his interest in reading other things too. Sophie's magazines and newspapers went unread. She saw them piling up on a chair in his room and asked why he was not longer looking at them. George lied to her that it was because of all the other reading he had to do. Sophie believed him. So for most of the day, George turned on the radio, and turned to music. He kept the house tidy, and Sophie said nothing in the days when he neglected it. She was still kind and gave him his extra money, even though things were not as good for him as they used to be. But they were good enough, considering
- One night George got confused and passed in front of Mr. Katanzera's house ( after he stopped walking there ) . George was surprised to see Mr. Katanzera still reading his newspaper . George had an urge to stop and talk to him , but he was scared so he decided it was better not to . He considered running away but he was too close to him . So George non - invasively crossed the street . He was afraid Mr. Katanzera would see him but all he did was sit there , sweating through his shirt and his bald head shining in the dim light while he read his newspaper.
