- I'm being held hostage by unwinds!
- This scene gives way to the 3 main characters meeting for 1 common cause. Conner, one of the main characters can be seen running toward the others to rescue them. This develops the plot by bringing them together to fight against death.
- chapter 24. Risa
- The significance of this scene shows the humanity that these children still feel for others, though humanity has shown them little. It also adds to the plot by having the need for the kids to work together to help the child they've rescued. "Storking" as it is used in the novel is portrayed as normal, but this sense shows the immorality of it.
- Chapter 60. Harvest & 61. Roland
- This scene shows the brainwashing that the tithes receive. Lev truly believed that he needed to die and serve his will to god, and that people that did bad needed to die as well. This affects the plot because Risa and Conner no longer trusted him, forcing him to continue his journey with others.
- Chapter 67. Risa
- In this scene, Roland, one of the people staying at the place for unwinds, was trying to get a reaction out of Conner by attempting to rape Risa. This scene is crucial because Conner didn't do anything. This gives Conner and Risa power over Roland, as he was unsuccessful.
- This scene describes the unknown things that happen while being unwound. The book describes there were " 12 surgeons in teams of two... nine surgical assistants and 4 nurses" thus saying this was a very tedious process. It also says they were wearing the color of smiley faces, this shows that they were trying to make a horrific thing childish and playful.
- This scene is incredibly powerful to the novel. These teens, because left disabled were unable to be unwound. Though unfortunate that they are left with permanent disabilities, they will not have to suffer the excruciating death of Roland.
