- Then one day a new girl moves in next door, tells usher name is Diana and becomesme and Maria's Second Best Friend in the Whole World. And even though Maria's motherknew Diana's mother in Puerto Rico, Maria promises that doesn't make Diana más mejoramiga- a better friend. But some days, whenit's raining and Mama won't let me go outside,I see themon the block, their fingers laced together, heading around the corner to the bodega for candy. Those days the world feels as gray and cold as it really isand it's hard not to believe the new girl isn't más mejor than me. Hard not to believe my days as Maria's best friend forever and ever amenare counted

- I selected this poem, because in elementary school it felt like this as well. My friend, knew a lot of people and it felt as if they would replace me one day. I like this story because I know I'm not the only person who has ever felt this way before, especially at a young age. When I was younger I felt as if I should only have one friend and stick with that one friend. I felt as if my friend kept making friends with other people she would one day prefer one of them over me and I wouldn't have any friends any more. My friends were an important part of my life and they helped me a lot, and seeing this poem just reminded me of elementary school days.
