  • A horse names Black Beauty lived happily with his mother and owner, who treated him very kindly. As Black Beauty grew bigger and stronger, he was trained to pull a carriage, so that he could be sold.

  • When Black Beauty was ready, he was sold to a man named Squire Gordon. Gordon was very kind to horses. At his new owner's large park, Black Beauty befriends Merrylegs, a pony, and Ginger, a horse.

  • As Ginger and Black Beauty became friends, Ginger shared that she had never been shown kindness as a young horse. Her masters were cruel and brutal. Black Beauty began to realize that not all horses were treated kindly.

  • While driving his owner on a stormy day, Black Beauty is the only one to realize that a bridge is broken. He saves his owner and driver by refusing to cross the bridge. He becomes known for his cleverness and bravery!
  • Black Beauty is sold again. The new mistress likes her horses' heads held high. Beauty is forced to wear an uncomfortable bearing rein that causes strain and injury. Beauty thinks it is silly for horses to go through this pain, just for the pleasure of humans.
  • One night, Beauty drives a man named Reuben Smith, who becomes drunk. Smith doesn't notice Beauty is injured and whips him to make him gallop. The harsh treatment injures Beauty's knees and he falls, killing Reuben. Beauty's knees never fully recover.

  • Work as a cab-horse is tiring, but Jerry is kind and makes sure Beauty can always rest on Sundays. While in London, Beauty runs into Ginger, who is suffering from overwork and poor treatment. Soon after, Beauty thinks he sees Ginger dead on a horse cart.

  • Black Beauty is sold to a cruel man named Skinner. Beauty describes his new life as wretched. One day, a young girl notices how poorly Beauty is being treated by Skinner, but she is ignored. Beauty falls and is badly hurt.
