- Max Vandenburg shows up at the Hubermans. They have to hide him from the Nazi's Because he is a jew. Max and Liesle become good friends because they have many things in common.
- Step 10: The Road Back
- Delivers laundrey to the mayors wife after she see's her steel a book from the burning. Liesle is afraid she will punish her.
- Step 11: Atonement
- The mayor's wife doesn't punish her. She shows Liesle her library. Liesle spends lots of time there reading.
- Step 12: The Return
- LIesle is watchind the parade of jews that are being sent to Dachau. She see's Max. Liesel learns that he was captured some six months ago. Liesle and Max are whipped for talking to each other. Rudy stops her from following Max any further.
- While everyone is sleeping the town gets bombed. Liesle survives, because she was in the basement reading. Everyone that she cared about dies. She finds rudy's body and kisses him.
- Liesle meets up with max and Rudy's father. They share stories about the past. Some are happy some are not.
