  • MATH: FLANGUAGE ARTS: DSCIENCE: FHEALTH: DPE: D
  • I- I was going to t-tell you but you know...Ugh I've been having a hard time at school..
  • MATH: FLANGUAGE ARTS: DSCIENCE: FHEALTH: DPE: D
  • *sigh* Fine, ok I think it's time we get you a tutor. Lets start with one subject, maybe math. What are you learning in math?
  • MATH: FLANGUAGE ARTS: DSCIENCE: FHEALTH: DPE: D
  • D-Difference of squares..AND I have a test in 2 weeks..

  • Date: Monday, November 20, 2023Current Time: 4:35 PMLocation: Breakwood Highschool
  • So I heard you were looking for a tutor Mr. Chan, for Jason right?
  • Principal
  • Well, we actually can provide a tutor for Jason, we have a session available this Thursday
  • Really? Thank you so much! Now he can prepare for his test
  • Date: Thursday, November 23, 2023Current Time: 4:30 PMLocation: Breakwood Highschool
  • Difference of Squares explained PT2
  • Well Jason, what is it you need help with?
  • Could you teach me about difference of squares? I have an upcoming test
  • Difference of squares is actually more simple than you think! Here lets look at my notebook.
  • What is a square root? The square root of a number is the number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. For example, the square root of 25 is 5 because the integers 5 and when multiplied by themselves, give the product 25.
  • .
  • Now before I get into explaining, lets go over some vocabulary you might wanna know.
  • What is factoring?Factoring is the process of finding two factors that make up a product.
  • Difference of Squares: Vocab
  • Now what is a GCF?The greatest common factor (GCF) of a set of numbers is the largest factor that all the numbers share. For example, 12, 20, and 24 have two common factors: 2 and 4. The largest is 4, so we say that the GCF of 12, 20, and 24 is 4.
  • Here are the steps to solve a difference of squares:1. Factor out any GCF is necessary2. Take out the square root of the first term3. Take the square root of the second term4. Put roots of each term into the format(A+B)(A-B)5. Make sure each binomial is factored completely
  • What is a binomial? In mathematics, a binomial is an algebraic expression consisting of the sum or difference of two terms. Binomials are one type of polynomial ("poly" means "more than one"). In the binomial expression 3x + 2, the two terms "3x" and "2" are connected by addition.
  • .
  • The second step is to take out the square root of both terms. For the first term(x2), x is the square root of x, for the second term(100), 10 is the square root of 100
  • Difference of Squares
  • To preface: A binomial is a difference of squares if:1, Both terms are perfect squares2. There is a minus sign between them
  • Now lets take this problem as an example: 4x2y-400y
  • So after you take out the square roots of both terms, you put the roots into the formula: (a+b)(a-b).So if a=x, b=10, the final equation will be: 4y(x+10(x-10)Remember: if you have a GCF it always stays in front of the equation
  • The first step is to see if you can factor out a Greatest Common Factor:4x2y-400y - 4y(x2-100)You can divide 400 by 4, which is 100, also both terms includes a y so y is a part of the GCF
  • .
  • Lets look at another example. Remember the steps?: 1. Factor out any GCF is necessary2. Take out the square root of the first term3. Take the square root of the second term4. Put roots of each term into the format(A+B)(A-B) 5. Make sure each binomial is factored completely
  • The first step is to factor out any GCF if necessary, as you can see, 410 and 81 cannot be factored.
  • The third step is to put the roots(2x5 9) of each term into the format, (A+B)(A-B), which is:(2x5+9)(2x5-9)
  • The final step is to check if any of the binomials are factored completely, and as you can see this problem is fully factored, so the final answer is:(2x5+9)(2x5-9)
  • Now, the second step is to take out the square root of both terms. In this case, 2 is the square root of 4, x5 is the square root of x10 and 9 is the square root of 81
  • 4x10-81
  • .
  • Remember: A binomial is a difference of squares if:1. Both terms are perfect squares2. There is a minus sign between themNow with the steps, solve the problem Jason
  • Difference of Squares
  • minus sign
  • 1. 9x2-4= (3x+2)(3x-2)
  • perfect squares(32=9, square root: 3, 22=4, square root: 2)
  • hmmm, lemme use the steps the tutor gave me
  • Steps:1. Factor out any GCF is necessary2. Take out the square root of the first term3. Take the square root of the second term4. Put roots of each term into the format(A+B)(A-B)5. Make sure each binomial is factored completely
  • .
  • Now, can you do these on your own Jason?
  • Difference of Squares(continued)
  • 2. 64x2-25= (8x+5)(8x-5)
  • Perfect Squares(8x8=64, Square root: 85x5=25, square root: 5)
  • minus sign
  • Yup! I think I got the hang of it now, using the steps.
  • Steps:1. Factor out any GCF is necessary2. Take out the square root of the first term3. Take the square root of the second term4. Put roots of each term into the format(A+B)(A-B)5. Make sure each binomial is factored completely
  • Congrats Jason! You know how to factor now! So now you are prepared for your upcoming test next Monday
  • Yup! I'm actually confident now! Thank you so much Mr. Berns!
