Rutherford Hayes was from Delaware, Ohio. After the war he severed in congress from 1865 to 1867 as a republican, he served as governor of Ohio for two terms and was the 19th president. He was Republican who pushed for voting rights for blacks and a gold banked currency.

Samuel Tilden was from Lebanon, New York. He was a member of the New York Assembly in 1846, and was a member of the state constitutional convention. He also supported the union cause in the civil war. He supported for a gold standard and low taxes.
There was a team of 7 Republicans 7 Democrats and 1 independent to review the voting results but the independent resigned and a republican took his spot and Hayes won there vote 8 to 7.
Compromise of 1877 was an informal written agreement that Hayes would take office if he removed his troops from the south.
