- There is something terrible morbid in the modern sympathy with pain.
- Lord Henry wanted to know more about Dorian Gray, so he went to his uncle Lord Fermor's house. The uncle said to Wotton that Gray came from a dark, tangled, and unhappy family.
- Meeting Lord Henry's wife
- I know you quite well by your photographs. I think my husband has got 17 of them
- Lord Henry's uncle told Harry that Dorian's grandfather had killed Dorian's father before he was born because he wasn't of the same social status. He believed that Dorian's father wasn't good enough for his daughter. The death caused Dorian's mother, Lady Margaret, to fall into depression and death because of sadness soon after Dorian's birth. The young lad was raised by his grandfather.

- After talking with his uncle, Harry went to his aunt Aghata's house to a party. There, he amazed everyone with his selfish thoughts about Beauty and suffering. Nevertheless, Dorian was impressed and they left the party together.
- His evil thoughts
- Dorian Gray was at Lord Henry's library when Lady Henry walked in telling him that she already knew who he was was. They started to talk about music when Lord Henry arrived. An awkward silence was broken by Lady Henry's announcement that she had to leave.
- Lord Henry told Dorian that he should never marry, to which Dorian said that he doesn’t think he will marry because he is too much in love. The young lad told Harry that the girl’s name is Sibyl Vane, an actress he saw at a small theater.
- When Dorian left, Lord Henry got lost on his thoughts. He began to think about psychology and how he was going to use Dorian as the subject for his experiment. He was then interrupted by a knock and his valet telling him to go to dinner. When he arrived from the dinner, he found a telegram that said that Dorian was to marry to Sybil Vane.
