  • The Persians conquered the Ionian Greeks 50 years ago and required them to pay tribute. When the Ionians decided to revolt against the Persians, they asked the Athenians for help. The Athenians agreed but left after initial success, leaving the Ionians alone to fall again to the Persians. After the Ionian Revolt, Darius, King of Persia, sent ambassadors to Greece to ask for presents of Greek earth and water. These gifts would be a sign that the Greeks had agreed to accept Persian rule. However, the Spartans and Athenians threw the ambassadors down a well and shouted...
  • Causes of the Persian War
  • "If you want Greek earth and water, help yourselves!”
  • Darrius sent his large navy to start a land war. Darius’ troops landed in Marathon, north of Athens. Even though the Spartans refused to help, the Athenians quickly beat the Persians, who lacked military experience. In their defeat, the Persians tried to advance towards Athens because the city was without its soldiers. But then a man named Pheidippides ran the 26 miles back to Athens and said "Rejoice, we conquer!" He then dropped dead. Since the Athenians were warned the Persians were coming, they were able to fight the Persians and win.
  • The Battle of Marathon (490 B.C.)
  • Sparta and its allies partnered up to take down Persia. The Spartan king, Leonidas, and 300 of his men tried to defend the pass at Thermopylae, while the other Greek forces retreated to further prepare for the Persian invasion. The Spartans were bitterly defeated, losing all 301 people. At the same time, the Athenian general, Themistocles, ordered the evacuation of all the women and children in Athens, while the men went to their warships. After their victory over the Spartans, the Persians headed to Athens; but they found it abandoned, so they burned the city.
