  • Heat Transfer:
  • Man, its really cold down here.
  • Convection
  • Why is it so much warmer upstairs in my room?
  • Cold air sinks
  • Hot air rises
  • By Ivan Mabilangan
  • I can't wait to drink my coffee.
  • Tommy is really cold downstairs so he decides to go upstairs to see if it is any warmer.
  • Conduction
  • Ow, this spoon is so hot. Why would the spoon be hot when the coffee was the thing that was hot.
  • Tommy is a lot warmer in his room upstairs because of something called convection. Convection is the transfer of heat from a liquid or a gas between different spaces due to a difference of temperature. The hot air rises, while the cold air sinks. Tommy's ceiling also has insulation, which keeps some of the hot air at the top of the house as the cold air falls to the bottom. This insulation would be considered a thermal insulator because it prevents heat from moving from one place to another.
  • Tommy woke up and was really thirsty, he decided to make himself nice, hot coffee. He put his spoon in the mug to stir it up.
  • When Tommy tried to take a sip of his coffee with his spoon, the spoon burned his mouth. The spoon got hot because of Conduction, the process in which heat energy is transferred through molecules or atoms when touching or colliding. The coffee in his mug was extremely hot and its heat transferred to the spoon and slowly moved to the end of the spoon while it was in the coffee. Heat was able to pass through the spoon because the spoon was metal and metal is a very good thermal conductor. Thermal conductors are materials in which heat can travel through.
