Storyboard Text

  • Xiomara feels unhide-able in her neighborhood because of her size. She also does not like how her Mother feels about her writing poems in a notebook. Her Mother does not like it if she is dating other boys. She sees a flyer that talks about a poetry club at her school, but she knows that her Mother will not let her skip the confirmation class at her church. She sees a boy in her biology class and she likes him and hangs out with him.
  • Calling all poets. Please join the poetry club.
  • Xiomara likes to write poems about Aman, a boy she likes at her school. She feels like no one knows about her witting. Her English teacher asks her if she knows anything about the Spoken Word Poetry Club and if she wants to join it. Xiomara writes about how she feels like she does not fit in to her society in an English assignment. One day, a boy from the poetry club invites her English class to join the poetry club. The student mentions a poetry slam. Xiomara feels like she should participate in it. She also feels unheard when a boy bumps into her at school and Aman does not behave like an upstander.
  • Aman
  • Sorry.
  • Do not bump into me.
  • You could have spoken up for me.
  • Xiomara's Mother is upset with her hanging out with boys after she says do not date boys. Xiomara does not see how kissing a boy is like hurting someone. Xiomara spends a large amount of days writing in her journal. She thinks that it is the only way she knows not to cry. She overhears her Mother talking on the phone and saying that she will send her to the Dominican Republic for the summer. She feels sad about going to the Dominican Republic because she does not want to be away from her friends.
  • I will send Xiomara to the Dominican Republic for the summer.
  • Aman sends Xiomara an apology message and she wants to send him something that says that she cannot have him without entering a fight she won't win. Ms.Galiano asks Xiomara what is stopping her from getting a large amount of details in her work. She also asks her if she wants to come to the poetry club for one day and listen and see how she feels about it. Xiomara thinks about Father Sean, who does not expect her to come to confirmation class anymore, but her Mother does. She thinks that no one will find out about her skipping confirmation class if she just stays at the church when her Mother picks her up. She thinks about how much she wants to share her poetry with other people. She tells Ms.Galiano that she will redo the assignment and see her at the poetry club the next day.
  • Your work seems less thoughtful these days. Is everything okay? Can you please come to the poetry club for one day and see how you feel?
  • Okay. I will try to redo the assignment and see you at poetry club tomorrow.
  • Xiomara and Aman do not hang out with each other anymore.Even though she is still upset about him behaving like a bystander, she feels like some of her also messed up too. She feels like it is a good thing that their relationship ended. She goes to the poetry club and a girl named Isabelle calls her a dope. During her first poetry club meeting, everyone has to read a poem to everyone. Xiomara feels too shy to read hers. When she feels like she can read hers, she sees everyone listening to her and she likes it when that happens. When Xiomara meets Caridad, her friend, at church later that day, she gets an invitation from her that she can go to an open mic with her. A girl named Isabelle asks Xiomara if she wants to come to the photography room during lunch and she will be there sometimes. Later that day, Xiomara's Mother threatens to send her to the Dominican Republic after winter break. Xiomara's Mother lets her go to the open mic poetry event. When she goes there, she finds out that Caridad signed her up to perform. She did a good job and the host wants her to join the poetry slam in February. She is excited to participate in that.
  • Who would think you could be a poet? Dope?
  • My name is Xiomara and I am going to share my poem with you.
  • Xiomara, please come with me to an open mic poetry performance.
