Storyboard Text

  • The Montgomery bus boycott was a group of African American leaders to run the boycott and negotiate with city leaders.
  •
  • The group elected a 26 year old pastor known as Martin Luther King, jr. Dr King encouraged the people to continue their protest but told them to keep it peaceful.
  • Martin's words brought African Americans in Montgomery to boycott for over a year. In November of 1956, the supreme court declared Alabama's laws for buses are unconstitutional. After the ruling the boycott ended and cities in the south still resisted.
  • Martin Luther King wasn't the only local minister in the boycott, many other leaders were ministers. African American churches served as forums for protest and planning meetings.
  • The bus boycott showed that you can protest peacefully. Dr. King soon made the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
  • The SCLC set out to eliminate segregation and to encourage African Americans to register to vote. Dr. King served as the SCLC’s first president. The organization challenged segregation at voting booths and in public transportation, housing, and accommodations.
