  • M - MILITARISM
  • A - ALLIANCES
  • "We are allies"
  • I - IMPERIAL COMPETITION
  • We gained control of this territory. We now have abundant raw materials and resources
  • We should be better than Britain!
  • Militarism is defined as the belief that strong military forces are required and should be used to gain political or economic advantages. It was a major cause of WWI for several reasons: It prompted European nations to strengthen and expand their armies, heightening tensions between them. It also sparked an arms race fueled by rivalry and fear of neighboring countries. For example, France and Germany engaged in a fierce arms race, while Britain and Germany engaged in a naval race centered on the construction of new naval ships. Many of them compete for a powerful military which resulted in tensions and conflicts that contributed to the beginning of WW1.
  • N - NATIONALISM
  • MAJOR IDEA: Serbian Nationalism
  • We are proud of our country! We are a great nation
  • In the years leading up to the war, European nations were constantly jockeying for power and making alliances. As allies, they agreed to protect each other - if one was attacked, the others were bound to defend them. So in 1881, Germany made an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy. However, Italy then went and made a secret alliance with France saying they would not aid Germany. Not long after, Triple Entente (France, Britain, and Russia) was formed in 1907. When it was formed, Germany perceived it as a major threat to their existence and power in the region, resulting in a number of tensions. As conflicts over alliances escalated, the strike of WW1 occurred.
  • ACTIVITY TOPIC:
  • M.A.I.N CAUSES OF WW1
  • Imperialism is when a country increases its power and wealth by bringing additional territories under its control. Some European countries, such as France and Britain, had created large worldwide empires and had become very rich.Other European countries like Russia and Germany were starting to get envious so they also wanted to create their own vast empires and gain more resources from the lands they can colonize. This caused great competition and conflicts between many countries throughout the world which then contributed to factors that started the WW1.

  • Nationalism was one of the factors at work in the run-up to WWI, with Serbian nationalism playing a particularly important role. The desire of Slavic people in Bosnia and Herzegovina to be part of Serbia rather than Austria-Hungary was at the core of the war's origins. Indeed, Serbian nationalism grew, culminating in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 which is the main spark that ignited the war. Furthermore, many European countries, such as Germany, believe that if they win and defeat the other countries, they will be a great nation and a world power with proud citizens. Many attempted to show their country's global dominance.
