- At the age of 22, Millicent Garrett Fawcett became the head of the London National Society for Womens Suffrage.
- This later became the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS)
- Votes for Women!
- One of their most successful strategies was The Suffragist Pilgrimage, a march in Hyde Park, to which 50,000 people attended, men and women.
- The NUWSS believed in working with parliament to get the vote, and protesting peacefully.
- Although the group was popular, some people thought that their passive ways were not helpful in gaining the vote. One of these people was Emmeline Pankhurst.
- She started the Womens Societal and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903, and they had a militant approach. Between 1912 and 1914, a 'wild period' began, consisting of acid attacks, setting fire to abandoned buildings and the women chaining themselves to parliament.
- Deeds not words!
- Despite all of these groups getting lots of support for women's suffrage, women were still unable to vote.
- However, when World War I began, this started to change. When men left their jobs to fight in the war, women took their places at work. Prior to this, women didn't work in jobs such as manufacturing, as the employers believed that women didn't have the skills needed.
- In 1918, property owning women over 30 were given the right to vote.
- After the war, many women kept their newfound jobs when the men returned. The NUWSS and WSPU restarted their campaigns and many men in power started to change their minds about womens suffrage.
- Finally, in 1928, all women over the age of 21 were given the right to vote.
