  • This system in used for the government in Australia to ensure fairness, so one house does not consume all the power over the other.
  • A government is formed when the political party with the most seats becomes theruling party, therefore if that party gets more than 76 seats, they get to form a government.
  • - Is spread equally across the country and represents the state and territories- Has the ability to say no to the legislation that comes out of The house of Reps- Has the power to keep the members from The house of Reps in check
  • The Senate "The upper house"
  • There are 76 senators in the senate!
  • - Where legislation comes from before becoming the law- Members of House of Reps represent a geographic area, known as electorates
  • The House of Representatives "The lower house"
  • There are 151 MP's in The house of Representatives!
  • However if a party gets more than 76 seats then they form a government
  • A government is the political party that has a majority in the House of Representatives
  • A parliament is the branch of the government of Australia, consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
