  • In beginning of the novel, Jalil is ashamed of his Mariam because he is afraid it will ruin his high class reputation. He doesn’t want to accept her as his real daughter which he later regrets.
  • Afghan Women’s Rights
  • Mariam and Laila grow to love each other eventually building a mother and daughter bond. They look after each other deeply and stand up for one another against Rasheed’s abuse.
  • Suffering Pain
  • After killing Rasheed, Mariam decides she will sacrifice herself and turn herself in so Laila and the children are able to live a life of freedom without the fear of being caught. Mariam loves Laila so much she is willing to do anything to protect her.
  • History of Afghanistan
  • After the Taliban enter Afghanistan, we see women’s life become drastically changed. They were deprived of various rights including the right to wear cosmetics, go out in the street alone, and so much more. If they went against these rules they would be severely beat.
  • Throughout the novel, we see almost every character experience hardships, especially Mariam and Laila. Mariam has a hard childhood growing up and looses her mother causing her to be pushed into an arranged marriage. Laila is forced to marry Rasheed in order to provide for her child. Rasheed is extremely abusive with both of them.
  • Laila’s father, Hakim, takes her and Tariq on a day trip to the famous Banian Buddha’s. On the way over there, Hakim and the driver talk about the history of imperialism in Afghanistan. Throughout the novel we learn various facts and events of the Afghan community.
